The "boat show" of the digital world kicks off this week in New York City, offering consumers a look at what's hot this holiday season.
DigitalLife, sponsored by parent Ziff Davis Media, is not a trade show, like the for-now defunct Comdex exposition or even the popular E3 video-game showcase held each spring. Instead, the event is designed to let the consumer play with the e-toys retailers are beginning to place on their shelves.
DigitalLife is expected to showcase new products from Dell, Research In Motion's BlackBerry division, Toshiba, and TiVo, among others.

We recently took a look at several performance CPUs last week - and we were incredibly impressed by the amount of interest it spawned. Our little Linux section has been making waves left and right and we are quickly establishing ourselves as the premier Linux hardware journal. We have been working very diligently on a GPU roundup to top all GPU roundups in the Linux world. It has taken us a little over 3 weeks from start to finish, but we think that the final product is well worth it.

Not that continual destruction isn't fun, but you can make a LAN party even more fun by providing alternatives—scheduled events that create a nice little breather. In addition to just being plain fun, some events appeal to subsections of the local techie community; the local case-modders might not be motivated to go to a LAN party across town, but they will go if there's a case-modding beauty contest. If you're interested in increasing your attendance, you could do worse than to think about including a couple of the fun events I'll describe in the following sections.

In Taipei a few months ago, we had a glimpse at BenQ's entire DVDR lineup for the rest of the year. Anxious to see working samples then, it seems as though lack of media continued to plague BenQ, Pioneer, LiteOn and NEC. 16X media is still difficult to find, but Verbatim and Ritek have some media for sale in the US already.

For those who follow our Linux reviews, we have made a lot of headway in the last two months. Our benchmarking has improved, our graph engine is top notch and we are working closely with all the major manufacturers to bring a definitive resource for Linux hardware to our readers. Today, we want to introduce everyone to our GPU Linux benchmarks and how we will run them in the future. This isn't a comparative analysis yet, but we won't keep you waiting long for that.

Although we have performed a few interesting benchmarks of processors on Linux in our past benchmarks, whenever I get cornered by a professor on campus or guest speak at a Linux Users Group, the first question anyone asks me is, "Which processor should I get for my new workstation?" Although the possibilities are totally limitless, the Linux users whom I have met generally have the mentality of "build something out of complete new parts, so it lasts" or "build something out of stuff that I find for free." Generally, the latter doesn't present many options, so today, we will address the first scenario - which new components make the ultimate Linux workstation. We found a few high end AMD and Intel processors to pit against our comprehensive Linux benchmark suite. Of course, don't forget to check out some of our other benchmarks including AMD Sempron, Opteron 150 and Nocona 3.6 from last month.
