This day has been a long time coming. For a long time, the common assumption was that ATI, now the graphics division of AMD, would launch the first of its next-generation DirectX 10 products, code-named R600, before the end of last year. Though everything pointed to such a release, it never came. November came and Nvidia launched their impressive new GeForce 8800 products (the G80 architecture), based on a surprising superscalar unified shader architecture. The new year came, Windows Vista was released, and still, no new ATI graphics card. Nvidia then extended their DirectX 10 offerings down to midrange products and value offerings with the GeForce 8600 and GeForce 8500 cards. |

Last summer, if you asked us when we would see new graphics cards based on the next-gen R600 architecture from ATI, we'd have told you "this fall." All signs pointed to a release ahead of Windows Vista. Then last fall, Nvidia released their DX10 graphics cards, the GeForce 8800 GTX and GTS. Microsoft followed up with the release of Vista at the end of January (required to run DirectX 10), and still no word from ATI. Now acquired by processor giant AMD, ATI finally pushes their DirectX 10 products out the door. The first to be released is the Radeon HD 2900 XT, a $400 top-of-the-line card. |

While AMD will tell us that R600 is not late and hasn't been delayed, this is simply because they never actually set a public date from which to be delayed. We all know that AMD would rather have seen their hardware hit the streets at or around the time Vista launched, or better yet, alongside G80. But the fact is that AMD had quite a few problems in getting R600 out the door. |
