In the past year, we've reviewed a couple of 30-inch displays, including the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP and the HP LP3065. Both offer 2560x1600 pixel resolution and excellent image quality, but are lacking in one key area: video processing. |

As pretty much the instigator of this whole LCD TV phenomenon now sweeping the UK, Sharp has taken rather longer than expected to take its place at the full HD LCD table. But thankfully the brand has finally got its finger out and launched a whole range of full HD models, the XD1Es, ranging in size from 37in up to a whopping 52in. |

Whatever else we might end up saying about the PS42Q97HDX, we certainly can’t accuse it of not making a helluva first impression. For starters there are its extravagantly glamorous looks, which combine to uber-classy effect a high-gloss, minimalist and unusually slender black bezel with a tasteful little silvery wedge section along the bottom edge. |

Few plasma brands have managed to combine budget prices with good performance levels as successfully as Hitachi. So it’s no surprise that it’s one of the ‘big three’ (along with Pioneer and Panasonic) currently involved in a major joint campaign to convince the public that when it comes to home cinema, plasma rather than LCD is the way to go. Shame, then, that Hitachi’s latest plasma offering, the 50in P50T01U, doesn’t do a better job of backing the pro-plasma arguments up. |

Clearly, size matters. For surely if Samsung was anything less than the world’s largest maker of LCD panels it wouldn’t be able to sell a 32in LCD TV as packed with features and quality as the LE-32R87BD for south of £500. |

Who’d have thought that one day a technology originally developed for CRT TVs (remember those?) would play a key role in the world of the flat TV? Nope, us neither. But that’s exactly what seems to be happening with 100Hz. |

German brand Loewe has had quite enough of today’s rampant TV price wars, thank you very much. The brand has recently announced that, like Pioneer, it’s going to consciously abandon trying to compete with the mainstream giants in favour of delivering premium products and a premium brand image with, of course, a premium price attached. Which is absolutely fine in principal; such premium brands have always existed in the hi-fi world, so why not the AV world too? The problem for Loewe is having the marketing muscle and more importantly the product quality to make Joe Public buy into the whole ‘premium’ idea. |

Find a 37in LCD TV with a price tag of under £700 attached to it, and you’ll usually find it wearing a brand name you’ve probably never heard of; a brand name more usually associated with the PC than the AV world; or a brand name long-renowned for focusing exclusively on budget products, such as Goodmans or Bush. What you wouldn’t expect to find is the word ‘Philips’ plastered boldly along the bottom. |
